through the 20th century. The problem however with education for the deaf is that little changed during that expanse of time. Therefore, this author concludes that education for
the deaf has been a failure. Contributing to the failure of deaf education are a host of bad decisions enacted by generations of parents and educators.
This book is a tribute to the deaf. The author provides this history of the deaf in such a way that the reader
is able to understand the struggles and triumphs that the deaf population has experienced through the years. This understanding helps to promote an intense awareness of the problem of
deaf education, which is ultimately the goal of the author. The author uses the voice of Laurent Clerc to narrate the
history of deaf education. This is a dramatic tool in this book because Clerc was Americas first deaf teacher. Lane portrays Clerc with a great deal of integrity
and compassion, and encourages readers to understand the huge contributions of this pioneering man as well. Laurent Clerc was a French
deaf teacher who was brought to the U.S. by Thomas Gallaudet. Clerc believed strongly in the use of sign language and also in integrating deaf people into the deaf
community, where they could experience a sense of belonging among peers. Clerc speaks from experience. As a deaf man, he became a model of what a deaf person
could achieve when one had the right tools at their disposal. Therefore, he became impassioned about his ideas of the best way to educate the deaf.
