individuals, and groups of individuals, who feel that information in a particular book can be damaging to the society and thus they try to censor the books from the public,
ultimately believing that they know what is best for the society. But, in truth, censoring books is something that, in todays culture, goes against the right for free speech as
outlined in the Constitution of the United States. The following paper examines book censorship and argues against the banning of books. Book Censorship Censoring books is essentially banning
books. It is an issue that truly goes against the First Amendment. As one author notes, as it relates to books in a schools library, "The law requires that if
a book is to be removed, an inquiry must be made as to the motivation and intention of the party calling for its removal. If the partys intention is to
deny students access to ideas with which the party disagrees, it is a violation of the First Amendment" (Mullally, 2009). There are many reasons why people want to censor/ban books
and it is generally because they feel, for one reason or another, that the content is harmful to society. For example, many parents wanted to ban the popular Harry Potter
series and they desired this because they believed that it encouraged witchcraft. For anyone who has read them and is not of that particular opinion it is obvious that the
books do no such thing. They do not encourage the worshipping of any being, which is generally what Christians believe witchcraft is all about. It was a magical series that
told the story of a boy who had been oppressed and never allowed to know about his special qualities which happen to be wizardry. Other books have been censored/banned because
