where competition from Airbus is likely to be greater. Either market segment can be difficult under conditions as they exist today, but the upcoming debut of the 787 Dreamliner
holds promise for significant advance in competitive advantage for Boeing. Strategic Focus When Boeing first planned its 787 Dreamliner fuel costs already had
become problematic for several airlines. That was before increasingly sharp spikes in fuel costs, however. Today, the Dreamliner looks even better to customers than in its earlier stages.
With an innovative design visually pleasing to passengers, the Dreamliner allows Boeing customers to pleasantly surprise their passengers. The Dreamliner promises to be so visually appealing that at
least some passengers will choose an air carrier based solely on its use of Dreamliners. Airline Industry Recovery The airline industry suffered greatly
in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, which caused a depression in the industry worldwide. Air travel continued to decline in 2002 and into 2003
to begin a recovery that still continues. Businesses are far more cost-conscious in todays business environment, and travel is more judicious than prior to 9/11 (Costs remain top of
mind, 2004). Decline of Business Class Designation In other parts of the world at least two leading airlines have dropped their business class
