Headquartered in Chicago, Boeing Corporation was founded in 1916 and has been a leader in the international aerospace industry virtually from the beginning. It provides aircraft to all
segments of aerospace ranging from commercial airliners to military specialty aircraft (Profile, n.d.). Boeing acquired its primary competitor, McDonnell-Douglas, in 1998. Today
its primary competition originates with Airbus. Boeing persistently complains that competition with Airbus is not fair, for Airbus is a consortium 80 percent owned by European governments and so
has government backing whereas Boeing has none of that. Airbus was more than twice the size of Boeing in terms of revenues in 2003, taking orders for $26 billion
in 2003 compared to Boeings $10 billion (Corporate Case Study, 2003). That was the first time that Airbus had been able to surpass Boeing, however, and it appears that
Boeing has regained the lead in the global aerospace industry. The companies have not yet published summary information for 2005, but a report made on January 6, 2006 states
that a surge of Airbus orders in December 2005 likely will result in the two companies finishing 2005 with similar business results (Airbus Says 2005 Orders Close to Boeings, 2006).
Boeing had a record year with 1,002 net orders for airliners during 2005 (Airbus Says 2005 Orders Close to Boeings, 2006). Boeing
clearly is the leader in innovation in the world market. It will enjoy the benefits of first-mover advantage regarding its latest commercial model as Airbus strives to refit an
