The airline industry has suffered through a number of economic challenges in recent years. Airbus and Boeing, however, have each
managed to persevere even in the most difficult of times. The internal strategies of these two companies have coupled with such factors as government subsidies to allow them to
not only keep their individual heads above water but to become one anothers primary competitor. Both are competing for the same prize and that prize is sales. As
a consequence of this competition and the governments varying role in the two companies successes, a debate has emerged as to whether government subsidies have been just and if, in
fact, they should continue. This paper will review some of the history behind this debate and comment on the question of whether the practice of providing government options to
private entities results in an equitable playing field that is of benefit not just to the respective companies but to the world as a whole.
It seems that the history of government subsidies in the case of Boeing vs. Airbus have been more in favor of the latter company. Boeing, on the
other hand, has relied more on internal strategy to keep the company afloat. The battle has been a long and hard one. No individual company could challenge Boeings
dominance until four countries in Europe entered into a consortium and established Airbus Industries. The creation of Airbus Industries came at
