Conflict of interest applies in every field of human endeavor, and we are entitled to ask whether someone is impartial when they have a decided interest one way or the other in the outcome of an event. In the case of Darleen Druyun and Boeing Corporation, however, it seems that no one even attempted to avoid conflict of interest issues. Druyun blatantly awarded contracts to Boeing to insure that she would be hired by the defense contractor when she left government service. It was a classic "you scratch my back, Ill scratch yours" situation in which she compromised her integrity (and cost taxpayers millions of dollars) by inflating the monetary awards to Boeing, and by slanting her findings so that Boeing appeared to be the only "reasonable" contractor the Air Force could select to receive its contracts. Background on Boeing The name "Boeing" is familiar to most people because of the success and safety record of its commercial aircraft. It was a Boeing airplane-the 707-that moved air travel into the jet age. Its 747 jumbo jet may be the best-known airplane ever built. The Boeing Company, which has corporate offices in Chicago, Illinois, is the #2 maker of commercial jets in the world and the second largest defense contractor, falling just short of Lockheed Martins numbers (Hoovers). Boeings operations are comprised of two separate segments, commercial airplane production (including research and development) and Integrated Defense Systems (Hoovers).
