and is often associated with other conditions such as eating disorders. The condition was officially recognized in the late 1990s; according to the American Psychiatric Association, there are three essential
criteria for the condition. The main element is a "preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance" (APA, 2000); such a defect may not be entirely imaginary, however, as the APA
also states that if a "slight physical anomaly" exists, the individual expresses excessive concern or anxiety about it. This preoccupation then causes "significant distress or impairment" (APA 2000) in the
individuals life. Although BDD is often linked to other conditions, it is separate from them: the APA states, for instance, that the individuals preoccupation
is not "better accounted for by another mental disorder" (APA, 2000) such as the dissatisfaction with physical size and shape which one sees in anorexia. Arthur and Monnell (2005) point
out that although BDD has only been recently acknowledged by the APA, it is not in fact a new condition. They note that over a century ago, there were reports
of people who suffered from a highly subjective feeling of ugliness, complaining of severe physical defects which were not noticeable by others, and who were unable to function properly because
of their unhappiness caused by the supposed defect. Phillips (1991) comments that "body dysmorphic disorder has been colorfully described in the European literature for more than a century" (Phillips 1991).
Arthur and Monnell state that the most common area of the body which causes concern for BDD sufferers is the face;
