are on the outside. However, if we really start to think about it we realize that who we are is often deeply related to how we look, to our body,
and to our appearance as well as our inner selves. We know this because as we grow up we understand that people base judgments on appearances. As we become more
aware in the world we begin to be influenced by how we look and how we look to others. The body, therefore, influences who we are or at least how
we see ourselves. The following paper examines two stories by women of color, Alice Walkers "and Judith Ortiz Cofers "The Story of My Body." The paper examines two quotes in
each story that relates to how their identity was formed and how their mind and body relate, if they relate at all. Alice Walker In this particular story
we begin to see that Alice Walker based much of her identity on how cute she was as a child. She knew this because people told her she was cute.
As such her identity began, as a young child, to be based on how others saw her. Then when she was still a child her eye was damaged and it,
from thereon, looked different. She was no longer cute, but different. Other people did not seem to care that she looked different, if they really noticed at all. But, within
herself she was angered because her looks had changed in a way that she felt was very bad. One of the quotes referring to this was "I do not pray
for sight. I pray for beauty." In this we see that she does not care if she can see through the eye again. She just wants to be beautiful, which
