Body art is most acceptable by people in their teens through their thirties. Yet, piercings in places other than their ear lobes is certainly something created by a generation that listens to death metal music and tests the boundaries of what is acceptable in society. Like each generation that came before, there is a testing of what is socially acceptable and what goes too far. When it comes to body piercing and tattooing, the generation has taken it to an extreme, something that characterized Gen X and has to some extent influenced Generation Y. Yet, are these trends really characteristic of a generation or two, or is it simply evidence that the world is moving forward and accepting of individuality? One could say that tattooing and body piercing is simply a form of self-expression and why some are drawn to it and some are not. Yet, it seems to hold a fascination for young people. Why do teenagers gravitate towards tattoos and piercings? Graves (2000) remarks that some teens get tattoos or piercings to rebel against parents or to be a part of a group. Some may just follow friends, but others get gang tattoos that acknowledge them as a part of a club. Others get tattoos to emulate people they admire like those who are famous, or they simply follow the lead of older siblings (Graves, 2000). Clearly, when a young person makes the leap, they are not thinking about how they will look thirty years down the road when they might put on some weight and the tattoo fades.
