to something else. Others have stated that a metaphor is "a device for seeing something in terms of something else" (PUWL). As these definitions suggests, metaphors help communicate what the author is feeling or thinking by drawing analogies between the authors experience and experiences that are common to all readers.. One area that all readers have in common is that each of us has a body. Therefore, it is not surprising that there are many metaphors that enhance understanding by drawing on metaphors that invoke the commonality of body experience. For example, in general, human experience that involves an emotional response has been associated with the heart. Experience that appeals to humanitys rational faculty is generally associated with the mind. In a recent article in Business Week, authors writing on the current conflict in Iraq made the observation that President George W. Bush was planned to fight this war on two fronts, one militarily and the other in efforts aimed "at winning the hearts and minds of 23 million Iraqis" (Dwyer, Reed and Cohn 45). These body metaphors convey concisely and accurately the image of the US endeavoring to win the support of the Iraqi people, by appealing to them on an emotional as well as a rational level. In order to accomplish this task, the article informs the reader that the US plans to spend $3.5 billion to rebuild the country, an amount of humanitarian aid that "will dwarf anything that the U.S. has done since World War II" (Dwyer, Reed and Cohn 45).
