most misunderstood aspects of business communication. The popular media has presented the topic of body language interpretation as though it were a science when, in reality, it is not
even a well developed art. It is true that fortunes have been made on the basis of an interpretation of an individuals body language. It is also true
that fortunes have been lost as a result of misinterpretation of body language. Even the experts, however, disagree about the usefulness of body language in discerning an individuals intent.
The intent of this paper is to investigate the factuality of body language interpretation. To do so the author has reviewed the scholarly literature on the topic.
The conclusion that is reached is that body language, at best, is a very fluid aspect of individual behavior. While an observation of body language might be useful in
some instances in termining individual intent, body language is entirely too variable a behavior on which to base important business decisions. The author recommends that an interpretation of body
language be used as a general guide to intent, not as a hard proof, and that even then it should be used only when the observer is very familiar with
the culture of the individual being observed and even with the individual themselves. II.
Practice Makes Perfect The popular perception is that body language can be interpreted to reveal an individuals inside feelings and intentions.
