inner being by outside forces. Body language, though it has emanated from a legitimate discipline, is something that many equate with a parlor trick. Some "psychics" for example use body language quite regularly to try to discern a persons attitudes or inner feelings. But in some sense, that might even provide evidence for its practical applications and not negate its legitimacy. Further, few can deny that a lustful stare cannot ignite a sexual encounter and, also, the deaf have indeed found ways to communicate without speech. There is a case for nonverbal language as being a legitimate form of communication. In studying body language as a serious subject, one is struck by the amount of literature that contradicts general thoughts on the subject. If someone folds his or her arms, does that mean the person is angry or might they just be cold? If one asks that question of a media person one will probably get a different answer than if someone had confronted a psychologist or physician who had studied body language extensively. What does the media have to say about body language? To get an idea of just what the general thinking on the subject has been, an article will be analyzed. An article written by Brian Clost seems to provide an overview of the general thinking on body language. Clost says that the eyes are sometimes called the most "potent tool of communication" (Clost PG) and because the eyes carry so much information, errors in eye-contact timing and expression may prove disastrous (PG). While some can understand the logic on the surface, others may think that the eyes are not so powerful.
