surgery and the altering of ones body in the hopes of being accepted in society. The following paper examines this issue in the nation, arguing that it may well be
the individuals sense of helplessness in relationship to the world and society that leads them to try to change the one thing they can; themselves. Body Image The
readings in this particular chapter are very wide ranging. They are articles that examine how people get tummy tucks, face lifts, go on diets, nose jobs, boob jobs, and even
men who have their legs broken so that they can become taller through excruciating pain. The authors examine the popularity of television shows, such as the Swan and Extreme Makeover,
that illustrate peoples fascination, if not obsession, with body image. All of these realities are not something that anyone can ignore if they live in American society today. They are
realities that are constantly being seen in magazines, television shows, and commercials. Even if one does not believe the images and messages they see, they are being influenced by such
images, ultimately made to understand that they, as an individual, are not as pretty or as thin or as attractive as they should be. It is interesting to note
that the articles or essays illustrate what it is that makes many people go to such lengths to be more attractive, but yet they do not seem to be getting
