in Europe following the Plague. The people were essentially disgruntled with the help that was offered by the Church and in all honesty they ran a bit wild. Boccaccios work
illustrates the wild and unpredictable nature of the people, using a great deal of humor through wit and trickery. The following paper briefly examines the role of trickery and wit
in Boccaccios ""Decameron." Trickery and Wit It is intriguing to note that even in the titles of many of the stories from Boccaccios work we see a powerful sense
of wit and trickery as well. In fact, sometimes the title even seems to sum up the story offering us a quick look at what will take place in the
story. For example, one story is titled "Masetto da Lamporecchio Pretends to be Deaf and Dumb In Order to Become a Gardener to a Convent of Nuns, Where All the
Women Eagerly Lie With Him." This is a tale that clearly speaks of trickery as this man pretends to be deaf and dumb in order to get women to sleep
with him. And, the title has a powerful sense of wit and comedy about it, thus further supporting the theme of trickery and wit within the stories. Another story
possesses another witty title: "Two Men Are Close Friends, and One Lies With the Others Wife. The Husband Finds it Out and Makes the Wife Shut Her Lover in a
Chest, and, While He is Inside, the Husband Lies With the Lovers Own Wife on the Chest." This is not all there is to the story, however. From the title
