Born in St. Anns Paris, Jamaica in 1945, Marley left home at 14 to pursue a musical career in the capital city of his island home. By 17, he had cut his first record and his album, "Simmer Down," with his group "The Wailers," topped Jamaican charts in 1964. From that point on, Marley was viewed as a national hero and the third worlds biggest pop star (Hammond, 2001). While Marleys career took him out of his impoverished background, he never forgot his roots and his music represents the social and political concerns of his people. This theme in his music is perhaps most evident in the song that Marley wrote and which Eric Clapton turned into a number one hit in the US, "I Shot the Sheriff." In this song, Marley is the voice of an oppressed minority, which frequently copes with the injustice of mainstream society. The songs refrain points out how the authorities often jump to conclusions and, in so doing, interpret a situation wrongly-- "I shot the sheriff, but I didnt shoot no deputy" (Marley, 2002). The first verse indicates that the singer is a wanted man being tracked down by the police, but that his guilt has already been decided. "They say that they want to bring me in guilty/For the killing of a deputy, for the life of a deputy" (Marley, 2002). These lines lead into the mans defense, in which he admits that he shot the sheriff, but he swears, "it was in self defense" (Marley, 2002). As this indicates, a crime has definitely been committed and, it would appear that both the sheriff and the deputy are dead. ...
