These translated words were delivered by Prussian Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck in his January 28, 1886 speech to his House of Deputies (Wright 27). "Blut und Eisen" (blood and iron) came to personify Bismarck and his efforts at the unification of Germany. Although bribery and even lies were among the means that Bismarck achieved German unification, the fact is that not only did he did achieve unification but he resisted the temptation to conquer Europe as a whole preferring to focus on continually building Germanys strength and safeguarding her borders (Art and Jervis). It has been asked throughout history, however, whether or not "blood and iron" were actually necessitated in this earlier time. The intent of this paper is to argue not only that "blood and iron" were necessitated at this point in world history but that it is necessitated today as well if we are to free ourselves of the many problems that are plaguing us. Just as Bismarck observed, resolutions and majority votes are simply insufficient to address our problems today and they were just as insufficient in Bismarcks time. Bismarck faced many problems even in the earliest years of his political career. He had, in fact, served on various committees and even on the legislature for Prussian domain itself and he was fully aware of the limitations of majority votes and resolutions.
