interest, most of the information comes directly from the Bluetooth web site, which presents detailed descriptions of the technology, and does so at many different levels. That is, lay readers
can comprehend it at the basic levels and those familiar with the concepts will find advanced discussions suitable for their comprehension. Bluetooth Basics Bluetooth is a wireless technology; it is
a "short-range communications technology intended to replace the cables connecting portable and/or fixed devices while maintaining high levels of security" (Bluetooth basics, 2006). Bluetooth is robust, uses low power, and is
inexpensive (Bluetooth basics, 2006). Bluetooth allows a wide variety of devices to communicate with one another (Bluetooth basics, 2006). Bluetooth has achieved such a level of acceptance that any device
using this technology, anywhere in the world, should be able to connect to any other nearby device that is also using Bluetooth (Bluetooth basics, 2006). Devices using Bluetooth "connect and
communicate wirelessly through short-range, ad hoc networks known as piconets" (Bluetooth basics, 2006). In addition, each device on the net can communicate simultaneously with up to seven other devices on
that same net; further, each device can hook up with several piconets simultaneously (Bluetooth basics, 2006). If one device can communicate with seven others, and each of those can communicate
with seven more, then very quickly were up to hundreds of individual devices that can communicate with one another via Bluetooth. "Piconets are established dynamically and automatically as Bluetooth enabled
devices enter and leave radio proximity" (Bluetooth basics, 2006). Bluetooth can handle both voice and data transmissions at the same time (Bluetooth basics, 2006). Because of this, users have a
variety of applications available, such as "a hands-free headset for voice calls, printing and fax capabilities, and synchronizing PDA, laptop, and mobile phone applications" among others (Bluetooth basics, 2006).
