to the end. The following paper examines the theme of blood in Macbeth, focusing on how the blood is often representative of guilt. Blood in Macbeth The play
opens with the closing of a battle scene to some extent and sets the stage for a violent world and a violent play. It is a beginning that speaks of
the pursuit of power and blood is a very important component of power and the pursuit of power. One author notes that, "Blood is everywhere in Macbeth, beginning with the
opening battle between the Scots and the Norwegian invaders" (SparkNotes). As the play progresses, however, and Lady Macbeth urges her husband to fulfill the prophecy before its time blood
begins to symbolize guilt. " Once Macbeth and Lady Macbeth embark upon their murderous journey, blood comes to symbolize their guilt, and they begin to feel that their crimes have
stained them in a way that cannot be washed clean" (SparkNotes). In seeing this reality within the play we note that when Macbeth kills Duncan he cannot seem to
get the blood out of his mind, his soul and his hands. He states, "Will all great Neptunes ocean wash this blood / Clean from my hand?" (Shakespeare II ii).
We can see that he is panicking because he has killed a man and there is blood on him that he cannot wash off. Even though his wife tells him
that some water will get rid of the blood, we sense that Macbeth is seeing far more than just the blood on his hands. He is seeing the blood in
his soul that cannot ever be washed off. He is guilty and the blood reminds him of this guilt. Even Lady Macbeth eventually becomes consumed with blood and we sense
