1. Company Overview Blockbuster Inc. is an international entertainment provider operating within the movie and game rental market. The company was founded in 1992, conducting business under the name Blockbuster
Entertainment Corporation and entered into the movie rental business in 1995 (Blockbuster, 2008). In 1994 Blockbuster Entertainment Corporation merged with Viacom, and in 1999 Viacom made an initial public offering
of Blockbuster Inc., offering 18 percent of its stock sale. Blockbuster is now an independent company as in October 2004 Viacom divested its remaining interest in the company with the
use of an exchange offer (Blockbuster, 2008). Today, but bust operates in 22 countries including the United States with more than 7,800 stores
internationally and 30,430 employees (Blockbuster, 2008). The company states its mission is to "provide our customers with the most convenient access to media entertainment, including movie and game entertainment delivered
through multiple distribution channels such as our stores, by-mail, and over the Internet" (Blockbuster, 2008). The core of the operations are located in the United States; in January 2008 Blockbuster
had a total of 4,855 stores within the United States, the majority of these are complete and outlets that are complemented with 850 franchise stores. In addition to the Blockbuster
brand the company also has 400 of the newer concept store in store operations trading under the Game Rush brand (Blockbuster, 2008). The
type of operations undertaken by the company has been changing, but has been a shift from the tersely store-based operations of the movie and game rental and sales through other
