directs him to look, asking the narrator what he thinks. The narrator states: "But I had my eyes closed. I though Id keep them that way for
a little longer. I thought it was something I ought to do" (Carver 11). In considering why the narrator thought this was something he should do, it is
necessary to go back to the text of the story and relate some of the fundamental elements defined by blindness and the choice of blindness. In the first paragraph of
the story, the narrator describes his relationship with the blind man, and his lack of enthusiasm for his interaction with this man. The narrator states: "I wasnt enthusiastic
about his visit. He was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me" (Carver 1). The narrator relates his limited perspective on people who are
blind by stating that his only knowledge of blind people came from stereotypical views of the blind in movies. The narrator seems blind to the value of having
limitations of one sense, and the impact that it has on the other senses. The narrator describes a time when his wife was with the blind man and he
asked her if he could feel her face. He felt every detail of her face and it touched her to such a degree that she felt compelled to write
about it (Carver 1). This type of contact, of intimacy, was the foundation of the friendship between the blind man and the narrators wife, but the narrator is blind
