human beings remain much the same. People still have to live with the consequences of excessive pride and impetuousness. They still benefit from spiritual enlightenment and the maturation. These commonalities are evident in a comparison of Homers ancient epic the Odyssey and the modern classic of Latino literature, Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya. Examination of both narratives demonstrates that they each concern stories of spiritual maturation. While the Homers protagonist is a grown man, a Greek hero of the Trojan War, Odysseus, and Anayas novel is the story of a six-year-old boy, they nevertheless bear this similarity. In the Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew are trying to journey home to Greece after the close of the Trojan War. This journey provides the narrative structure for the epic, during which Homer portrays Odysseus and his crew being subjected to a variety of punishments that all result from their own submission to temptation and/or recklessness or to excessive pride (hubris). One of the main principal examples of this is when Odysseus and his crew are trapped in the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus, the son of the god Poseidon. Odysseus wisely does not tell the Cyclops his true name, cleverly telling Polyphemus that his name is "Nobody." After Polyphemus reacts to the presence of the men by eating two of them, Odysseus attacks and manages to blind Polyphemus by stabbing him in his eye. When Polyphemus friends respond to his cries of pain, the Cyclops responds to their questions by saying that "Nobodys killing me now by fraud and by force" (line 455, p. 224).
