that Anaya brings to this conflict is the ambiguity of what culturally defines "good" as opposed to what is considered to be "evil." Ultimately, Antonio is able to amalgamate all
of the conflicting cultural elements in his life, which gives him a firm foundation for his future. Antonios world, which encompasses the New Mexican village of Guadalupe shortly after
World War II, is one made up of opposites. First of all, his parents, although both Hispanic, represent strikingly different backgrounds. Antonios mother, Maria, comes from a family of pious
Catholic farmers. She steers her son toward a life in the priesthood. Antonios father, Gabriel, on the other hand, comes from a long line of nomadic horsemen who have spent
their lives on the "Ilano" (plains). Antonio counts Ultima, an elderly woman who is actually no relation, as a member of his "family." Early on, he explains that
his parents did "good" by providing a home for Ultma, who had no one to care for her in old age. Antonio says, "It was the custom to provide for
the old and sick. There was always room in the safety and warmth of la familia for one more person, be that person stranger or friend" (Anaya 4). It is
through Ultimas teachings that Antonio learns the to truly appreciate the wonders of the natural landscape. A homeopathic healer, Antonio learns the names of herbs and roots as he
helps Ultima gather them for her medicines. Antonio says that from Ultima, he learned "that there was a beauty in the time of day...that there was peace in the river
