within the framework of a larger society (Parrillo, 2006). Considering this, the subordinate nature of the relationship of minority groups to the dominant group in United States mainstream culture is
highly significant to the quality of life, as well as how minorities see themselves and others. The following analysis of sociological research and theory will explore the ramifications of minority
status for African Americans in relation to the dominant nature of Caucasian European-descended Americans. Theoretical framework Sociological theoretical perspectives relative to minority relationships to dominant groups encompasses a
variety of viewpoints. Three of the main theories are functional theory; conflict theory; and interactionist theory. Functionalists view societal features in terms of how they operate (i.e., function) within a
society. Critics of this position argue that this viewpoint tends to emphasize "order and stability" over problems of "inequalities of gender, race and social class" (Parrillo, 2006, p. 12). Certainly,
this was the stance of antebellum Southerners who saw slavery as a functional and crucial part of their economic system. Proponents of conflict theory have been influenced Marxist
