The concept of outsider culture is in itself a fairly complex one, in the sense that to define who or what constitutes the outsider is very much a matter
of personal and cultural perception. It might, therefore, be useful to look at some of the significant features of insider and outsider cultures in order to assess the extent to
which African American culture and music can be seen as relevant to the concept as a whole.
One of the reasons why it is difficult to define outsider culture successfully is because those who are considered
as outsiders in the perception of the majority culture will see themselves as insiders in terms of the minority culture to which they belong. In addition, the same individual may
well be able to transcend various social and cultural barriers and belong to a number of different groups simultaneously.
People define themselves, and are defined by, such elements as their gender, their ethnicity, their socio-economic status or their
sexual orientation, and consequently these different facets may take on different degrees of priority at different times in their lives, or in different social situations. A black lesbian woman living
in a predominantly black, heterosexual community may choose to define herself first and foremost as black, since this allows her to perceive herself, and be perceived by others, as an
insider. However, in a gay community where there are a number of different ethnicities, she may well shift the focus of her self-identification to her sexuality, since the insider group
