violence in Ontario, as the rate for gang-related homicides rose to 107, which was 35 murders higher than the 2004 total (Dauvergne and Li, 2006). The motivations for these crime
varies, but generally involve some sort of "setting of accounts," either over turf disputes or a drug debt (Dauvergne and Li, 2006). However, the murder of innocent bystanders who are
killed due to gang-related violence are also considered to be murders that are gang-related (Dauvergne and Li, 2006). Gang-related homicides in Ontario in 2005 occurred predominantly in the city of
Toronto, within its metropolitan areas of Edmonton, Montreal, and Calgary (Dauvergne and Li, 2006). However, things began to improve somewhat in 2006. For example, in March of 2006, the
reputed leader of a Tamil gang whose pitched battles with rival gangs on the streets of Toronto claimed the "lives of more than a dozen youths in the late
1990s," was deported to Ski Lanka (Shephard, 2006, p. A01). Kaileshan Thanabalasingham was cited under a section of the immigration act that "prohibits involvement in a criminal organization," which marks
