up relatively simple and realistic women and young women who are pulled into dangerous situations that are frightening and real. Her novel "Black Water" is such a story. What makes
it a bit different is the fact that it is seemingly based on a real story that was incredibly public and political. The story itself is clearly not factual in
many ways, but the idea itself was clearly inspired by a true story that clearly had Oates thinking and imagining. The following paper examines the significance of this story from
several perspectives. Black Water One of the most significant aspects of this story is that which was mentioned above, in relationship to it being based, seemingly, on a
real life event. The event was one involving Senator Edward Kennedy and a young woman he was driving with back in 1969. They were in an accident and Kennedy walked
away with no injuries it seems while the young woman was killed. The real story created a great deal of controversy and likely haunted Kennedy for many years. Oates story
is significant because it takes this real event and puts it into more modern times, mentioning the Gulf War and such, and thus not truly making it a story "based"
on real events, but a fictional work inspired by the nature of the wealthy and powerful and the nature of simple young women lured by power. One of the
significant aspects of this book also involves her method of writing and presenting the story. Each chapter has very much the very same words or elements, within almost as though
it were a chorus to a song. The young woman, Kelly, offers repetitive lines or images that mix with details of her life and her circumstances, as well the people
