A 3 page research paper/essay that explores the social phenomena of black violence, and specifically black-on-black crime. The writer attempts to explain this violence using Marxist theory. In February of 2006, Coy Freeman, an African American resident of Chicago, was buckling his baby into a car seat, preparing to take his other three children to Parkman Elementary School, when a drive-by shooter opened fire. Freeman was shot through the eye, but eight-year-old Ariana and 6-year-old son, who is also named Coy, were both wounded (Sweeney and Donovan 6). The assassination attempt is alleged gang-related and, though Freeman has a criminal record, he was not known to be violent and he has denied being a gang member (Sweeney and Donovan 6). While the incidence of crime, in general, has gone down in recent years in Chicago, black-on-black crime has not. Marxist theory offers some possible explanations for why this should be so. for why this should be so. While Marx did not address the topic of crime extensively in his writing, he did argue that, in general, laws were "codified means
by which one class, the rulers, kept another class...in check" (Covington). A basic concept of Marxism is that the underclass (i.e., the poor) are pushed by sociological forces toward the
commission of crime and deviance is at least partially the "product of unequal power relations" (Covington). A Marxist view maintains that crime frequently evolves from society only offering certain segments
of the population work that is "demeaning" and lacking in any "sense of creativity" (Covington). One of the leading theories that offer explanation for black-on-black crime is the Structural-Cultural
perspective, which draws on a Marxist perspective, as it examines patterns of "political, economic, social, and cultural organization," which are designed to "perpetuate White superiority and Black inferiority" (Oliver, as
cited by Turner 13). This produces adaptation to environmental pressures that are fundamentally dysfunctional, promoting self-hatred (Turner 13). It has been suggested that this self-hatred causes some young black male
