plantation society. Landowning aristocrats who were not going to allow any Yankees to impede their chosen way of life vigorously supported secession. To them, the Civil War was
a battle for honor and the preservation of their cherished ideals in a noble tradition dating back to the ancient Greek warriors. The hastily organized military regiments paid little
mind to the fact that the North possessed more manufacturing plants, greater shipbuilding facilities and transportation than the South. There was nothing greater or more worth fighting for than
"the cause," as it was proudly proclaimed in a collective chorus of Confederates. With their own President, Jefferson Davis; Vice President, Alexander Stevens; Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin;
and Inspector General Samuel Cooper, the Confederate States of America (CSA) set about the task of fighting the good fight, steadfast in the belief that right would ultimately persevere over
might. However, as early as 1862, some chinks began appearing in the stoic Confederate armor, and Jefferson Davis (who was personally opposed to the measure) was forced to petition
his congress to force them to permit the utilization of black soldiers. He repeated the same pleas two years and many defeats later, which included the devastating defeats at
Gettysburg and Vicksburg. The Confederate Congress finally relented in March of 1865, but within one month, the Civil War was over. It appears obvious that incorporating black soldiers
into the military mix served to further erode the Souths ability to wage warfare against the North. Therefore, it must be concluded that the late entry of Black Confederates
