crisis. Heng, as noted by one critic, is an author whose "popularity...comes from his understanding of the realistic details in the day-to-day life of the ordinary Chinese citizen, and from
his poignant and candid depiction of societys bleaker side" (University of Iowa News Release). The following paper analyzes the novel as it relates to the fact that so many of
the characters cannot adapt to the growing capitalistic ideal of China in post-Mao times. Black Snow by Liu Heng: Li Huiquan The primary character in the novel, Li Huiquan,
is the most obvious character who has trouble adjusting, or finding any meaning, in the new direction China has taken. Granted he is a young man who has just been
released from a prison, but that only further strengthens the drastic contrast between the common people and new direction of capitalism. Such a perspective, in the character of Li, truly
provides a dire and almost desperate identity in relationship to the people, the common people. It is relatively obvious in the beginning that Li is a man who will
find it difficult to adjust. He has just gotten out of the prison camp and wanders the streets: "Ah, a good meal, of course. Now, where to go....The names
of renowned Beijing restaurants glided through his mind, and his intestines quickly got into the act. He didnt like the idea of eating alone, but where was he going to
find a companion? Hobo was dead, and Spike Fang was serving a life sentence, which was nearly the same thing. No sense feeling sorry for himself, since his friends were
