pattern is unfortunate but statistics show that by and large, it is a reality. Government statistics demonstrate that the percentage of all babies that are born to unwed mothers rose
to 32 % ("Detroits," 2002, p.PG) in 1997, a figure that was just 5.3 % (2002, p.PG) in 1960. While that is the case, those statistics do not
say anything about the black single mother specifically. However, this indicates a greater acceptance of single motherhood in general. It is true that trends have emerged where more women are
choosing single motherhood as opposed to remaining childless or living with a man they do not love. Some examples of mothers fighting the biological clock are Madonna and the fictitious
Murphy Brown. More recently, The Practices character played by Cameron Manheim chose to have a baby and so, one sees that this course of action is more acceptable today. In
fact, when The Practice decided to address the issue, no heads were turned but a decade ago, when Murphy Brown planned her pregnancy, a lecture was given by Vice
President Dan Quayle. Although there is a trend to plan unwed pregnancies, that is not the story in the impoverished black communities where young women find themselves with child.
Nationally, 69 % ("Detroits," 2002, p.PG) of births in the black community were to unwed mothers. This is an astounding statistic, suggesting that a large proportion of black children grow
up in single parent homes. This trend is also exemplified in families and there is much anecdotal evidence to support the idea that young, black women find themselves pregnant and
