From a humanistic standpoint, the distribution of health care services should occur in accordance with the principle of equality of opportunity. Access
to health care should not vary according to culture, race, socioeconomic status, geography or even national affiliation. Indeed, it has been proposed that health care should be viewed as a
universal right. While there will be certain costs from such a view, the benefits will far outweigh those costs when we consider the productivity and other positives that come
from good health. This is particularly true when we consider the costs of unchecked disease, lost days at work, and lost productivity overall. Unfortunately, even within our own
society we have not achieved equality in regard to access to healthcare. Certain components of our society, in fact, fall far behind other components in this regard. This
is particularly true of African American males. Summarizing an article by Talcott, Spain, Clark, et al (2007) the Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality (2011) reports that black males diagnosed with prostrate cancer tended to be younger, and have less education and income than white males diagnosed with this disease. Furthermore, these
black males typically held less job status and were less likely to have continuity of care. Part of the problem these males experienced was less access to health care.
