One person that comes to mind is the explorer Richard Burton who would often disguise himself in order to find out more about forbidden cultures and practices. But, generally speaking we do not see people moving away from their inherent culture to secretly observe another. Anthropologists search out other cultures and the practices of other cultures, but they do so from an outsider perspective, not a secretive position that allows them to truly become a part of the culture and learn of the culture. In John Howard Griffins book "Black Like Me" we do see a man who disguises himself as a black man in order to observe and learn about the black culture. In the following paper we review his book and then briefly compare his work with that of George Orwell in an essay titled "Shooting an Elephant." Black Like Me The first thing that this particular reader found so fascinating when examining Griffins life and work was that although he came from the South his experiences out in the world were such that black no longer had any connotation concerning American blacks. He was almost immune to the color of anyones skin due to the fact that he had worked, as a medic, with so many different skin types and cultures that black did not mean the same for him as it would for the typical American Southerner. This is perhaps the most powerful aspect of the book for it presents us with a writer who is completely unbiased and completely objective in his observations.
