turmoil." A student asks: "To what extent was the Civil War a war for Black emancipation and to what extent did emancipation become a reality for ex-slaves during the Reconstruction
era? " In answering this question, it pays to look at the thought at the time. How were black people treated then? How did people look at slavery? To some
extent, slavery was not sanctioned as many people had consciences and either did not own slaves or at least quietly opposed the practice. One has to ask where the churches
were on the issue also as religious life was paramount at the time. First, it should be noted that the Catholic church supported it (Capizzi, 2004). Yet, the Catholic church
was not dominant at the time. Interestingly, the salves did participate in religion and there are stories of Northern slaves where they actually would attend church with their Protestant masters.
Somehow it was reasoned that slavery is acceptable. That is hard to believe in this day and age where it is morally repugnant. In exploring the time period before
the Civil War, Equaino (1998) takes one on a journey through the 1700s slave trade. His account and others that were written at the time seem to suggest a disregard
for human life. Slaves were brought in on ships, shackled and naked and many did not survive the journey. They were torn from their home lands and while many do
