Both the UK and the US have exercised a considerable degree of involvement with Cyprus
over the years since the commencement of British rule in 1878. Prior to this, Cyprus had had a somewhat turbulent history dating back thousands of years, and characterised by a
series of invasions, primarily by the Greeks and Turks, interspersed with periods of independence, and was a part of the Ottoman Empire immediately prior to the British takeover.
At the time that the then Sultan ceded the island to the British in the nineteenth century, it was still officially
allowed to remain a part of the Turkish empire, although under British administrative rule. However, in 1923 the island came fully under the control of the UK and, according to
Parkins (2001), this marked a period of growth and prosperity for the country. It is true that the colonial administration
improved such aspects of the economy as healthcare and education, but the expression and development of Cypriot culture was severely restricted by the British administrators: there were constraints on the
teaching of Greek and Turkish history, and the imposition of harsh taxes resulted in riots against the colonists. There was also great discontent amongst the islanders at the way the
