It remains viable today. Though he fathered birth order theory, Adler believed that genetics and other psychological aspects were more important than birth
order, including "organ inferiority, parental attitudes, social & economic position, and gender roles" (Stein, 1998). Yet, the overall purpose of all of his considerations was for how individuals functioned
(or did not) in society. The student may want to note that not everyone supports Adlers concept, even those who support the
birth order theory. One detractor is Sulloway (1997), who believed that Adler was biased in his views on the subject. Sulloway writes, "Adler, a secondborn, regarded firstborns as power-hungry conservatives.
He described laterborns as typically competitive (middle children) or spoiled and lazy (youngest children)" (Sulloway, 1997, 5). While Sulloway has a right
to his view as well, underneath is Adlers supposition that the placement of the child in the birth order was partly responsible for the long-lasting self-opinions and attitudes toward life
developed by the individual. He also believed that if there were a number of years between siblings, new subsets of birth order were created.
