that "less developed countries in Latin America and Asia benefited tremendously from the Green Revolution" (Prakash & Conko, 2004). Of course, there is another side to the story. For example,
the Zambian government turned down free corn from the United States because "the U.S. corn that might have gone to Zambia or any other nation... contained genetically modified grains" (Pringle,
2003, p. 185). On one hand, there is the idea that the food created in the United States is good food, and that it could certainly help starving people in
other nations, but on the other side are concerns of safety. Prakash & Conko (2004) argue that the concerns are not warranted. They write: "No one argues that we should
not proceed with caution, but needless restrictions on agricultural biotechnology could dramatically slow the pace of progress and keep important advances out of the hands of people who need them."
They add: "This is the tragic side effect of unwarranted concern" (Prakash & Conko, 2004). It has been noted that Zambia was a nation overly concerned and Prakash & Conko
(2004) do examine that situation as follows: "President Mwanawasas public explanation was that the bioengineered corn from the United States was poisonous. Other Zambian government officials conceded that the bigger
concern was for future corn exports to the European Union, which observes a moratorium on new G.M. foods." Pringle (2003) claims that the Zambians, to their credit, did believe that
