is the highest, it is also the home nation of five of the largest pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer, which with purchase of Pharmacia in 2003 increased the lead it had
over rivals such as Johnson & Johnson, Merck & Co, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Abbott Laboratories (Yahoo Finance, 2005). The second largest market in Europe, here there is a far more
regulated industry and it the residence of the remaining five of the ten largest global companies; GlaxoSmithKline (the result of the merger between SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome in 2000),
Sanofi-Aventis, Roche Group, AstraZeneca and Novartis (Yahoo Finance, 2005). The third largest market is Japan, here there is an even greater level of regulation that that seen in Europe,
