Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 5 page paper discussing some of the biometric security applications available to organizations. Ranging from avoiding time clock fraud to identifying terror suspects among war zone detainees, most current biometric applications rely on fingerprints to confirm individuals' identities. Some companies already have personal applications in place in Asia and expect to see US cell phones and laptop computers featuring biometric safeguards by the end of 2005. Nearly all of the biometric applications discussed here are based on fingerprints. The next generation likely will focus on a greater number of biometric measures. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

various types of body measurements for the purpose of identifying individuals. Most biometric operation is based on fingerprints, but other body measurements also are used. These other measurements
include "hand geometry, voice patterns, facial patterns and the eyes iris" (Henricks, 2005; p. 87). Biometrics technology moved from the realm of science
fiction to reality long ago, but it was expensive and mysterious. The result of that combination was that it did not enjoy great popularity, even though it did receive
great interest. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 provided additional interest, however, after biometry came to be seen as an anti-terrorism tool. Today it receives greater attention,
and has found a home in a wider range of applications. Organizations Use To date, most applications are based on fingerprint identification.
Though not 100 percent accurate, biometric authentication is still quite useful. One of the problems with using fingerprints is that some people have naturally faint fingerprints difficult for scanners
to read, which is not a huge problem in small databases but can be a significant difficulty for those organizations wanting to positively identify thousands of people over time. Time
Cards A single business is an example of a small database where biometrics work well. When there is some malfunction, using an
alternate form of identification is less of a problem. This is what the owner of Del Rey Nut Co. found when turning to biometrics to solve time card problems.
With only 30 employees, Del Reys payroll was inflated because some of those employees "were filling out phony timecards and cashing paychecks for hours they hadnt worked" (Henricks, 2005;
