often heralded as one of the most noble and honest men in American history. However, at the same time most people do not necessarily know a great deal about this
founding father. The following paper examines the life of George Washington with a strong focus on his years as President. George Washington George
Washington was "born in 1732 into a Virginia planter family."i It is not truly known, with any great certainty, where exactly he was born, however.ii In addition, not a great
deal is known about his very early years, though most people hear about his cutting down of a cherry tree and telling the truth, with the infamous line, "I cannot
tell a lie." This is quite likely something that never even happened, and is often attributed to a story about Washington and not any events that really happened in Washingtons
childhood. He apparently learned his "morals, manners, and body of knowledge requisite for an 18th century Virginia gentleman" from his family, a family that was fairly well off and had
strong connections.iii When he was a teenager he became interested in possibly going into the military, into the Merchant marines. His mother, however,
was unsure of this decision and wrote to her half-brother in England, asking his advice. He told her, "The navy would cut him and staple him and use him like
a Negro, or rather like a dog. And for any considerable preferment in the Navy, there are always too many grasping for it here, who have interest and he has
none."iv Thus his mother decided he would go into studying surveying instead. And, it was at this time that he pursued his two interests, western expansion and military arts.
