It is the observance of shared lessons learned by others that appeals to the contemporary mind, but also the art of storytelling, that maintains the age-old desire for exploring biography. James Strassmaier has said that oral histories are personal to the reader. They have an enormous potential to impact lives by stirring up change in them, "a power that stems from its contemporaneity as it encourages the revisiting of times we are most connected to but are - sometimes willfully - leaving behind" (Strassmaier). The reason that we pursue biographical history is in deference to a need to understand the lessons learned at an earlier time, but needed now. Strassmaier says personal histories can be shared with the general public because of "the sheer force of attraction, and conviction, of human stories with their intimate views into the realities of life and times" (Strassmaier). Strassmaier believed biography is more than a recounting of history or a life in terms of fact, but that factual realities are, indeed, the important focus of biography. The student may want to state that Jean Edward Smith agrees with this assessment, but he believes biography is an art form that should take into account the ancient art of storytelling, including emotional embellishment as a creative narrative technique, without fictionalizing the account in the process. The reason for Smiths belief is because of his own desire to tell the "greatest" stories, the stories of real heroes and saints, told in ways that express their greatness to society.
