or not, Lust for Life vividly presents the artists fervent devotion to his work in contrast to the emotional turmoil that pervaded his personal life. A biography aimed at a popular audience, such as the one Stone has written here, presents a number of problems for the author. Foremost among these is the fact that for the public has a number of preconceived beliefs about the celebrity, and the author must choose to either reinforce these ideas or to reinterpret them. Stone chose the latter course. There is nothing in Lust for Life that is terribly original, or would come as a shock to anyone with even a cursory knowledge of Van Goghs life. It is in Stones colorful method of retelling Van Goghs story, not the originality of his interpretation, that Lust for Life shines. As an example, we will contrast the retelling of one anecdote in two "conventional" Van Gogh biographies with the Stones version of the same incident. This incident tells of the time, shortly before Van Gogh began studying art seriously, when he was engaged as an "evangelist" (apparently some form of lay preacher) in a remote and desperately poor mining community. All three sources agree that Van Gogh accepted this post under the naive assumption that a bourgeois young man could move into this environment, sprinkle a little Gospel around like holy water, and grow flowering souls for Christ. He soon found out differently; in fact, he decided that the only way he could help these people at all was to become just like them. This led him into conflict with Church authorities and he was dismissed.
