is his uncle who married his mother, Gertrude, a mere three months following the murder of Hamlet Sr. The young princes conflicted feelings of grief, betrayal, and suspicion are
bound to cloud his judgment where Claudius is concerned so his depiction of his new stepfather as a one-dimensional villain is understandably somewhat prejudicial, and therefore, suspect. Examining the
many layers of Claudius as well as considering critical interpretations of his actions will not only provide insight into the character but will also, invariably, lead to a greater overall
understanding of the play as a whole. After the slaying of Hamlet Sr., his younger brother Claudius ascended to the throne not through succession, but by way of a special
election. A bitter Prince Hamlet remarked that Claudius, much to his chagrin, "Poppd in between th election and my hopes" (V.ii.65). Northrop Frye noted in his critical appraisal
of Hamlet that the decision for Claudius to succeed his brother was a "sensible" one in that the volatile Wittenberg University student was, most likely, rejected for being "too young
and untried" (92). When he is first introduced to the plays action, in Act I, Scene II, Claudius is every bit the king in terms of appearance and his
swift action to prevent war with Prince Fortinbras of Norway certainly illustrates the "coolness and shrewdness" of courage under fire (Frye 92). His sudden marriage to his brothers widow
