that are extremely painful for the writer to relive. Such was the challenge Lisa Brassard Mayer confronted when she decided to use the anguish of her own life as
an abused wife as the inspiration for her 2008 novel entitled Silent Victim Running Free. The protagonist Laurie is clearly Lisas literary alter ego. Like the author, Laurie
falls in love with a Middle Eastern man, despite their many cultural differences, which may have actually heightened their attraction to each other. She convinced herself that his intense
jealousy was reflective only of his passionate nature, and not anything about which to be concerned. However, Laurie/Lisa would be in for a rude awakening, when marriage to Sahir
became a nightmarish odyssey of abuse and despair that would leave permanent scars upon herself and her children. Biographers must walk the sometimes-tenuous tightrope between telling a good story that
moves swiftly and presenting a multidimensional characterization of the subject that requires thoughtful detail. There must also be a careful layering of setting so that it, too, reveals the
contours of life instead of appearing as flat as the printed page. Lisa Brassard Mayer was not an accomplished writer. She was penning her experiences as a kind
of literary therapy in hopes of acquiring the strength to leave her suffering behind after putting it on paper. She admitted later to being overcome with emotion while writing
