the connection is difficult to prove, though it seems clearly understood. This paper considers two fields of study that are important to understanding the environment, biodiversity and dendrochronology. Discussion Biodiversity
is "shorthand" for "biological diversity," and has been defined as : "the variety of life forms, the ecological roles they perform, and the genetic diversity they contain" (Wilcox, 1984, p.
71). There are many other definitions, but the general consensus seems to be that the term refers to the great variety of species of life on this planet. What
is the importance of biodiversity? According the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in 2002, biodiversity was listed as one of "five priority areas central to implementing sustainable
development" (Timmer and Juma, 2005, p. 24). The five are "water and sanitation, energy, health and environment, agriculture, and biodiversity and ecosystem management (WEHAB)" (Timmer and Juma, 2005, p. 24).
(The idea of sustainable development means that humans will not use more resources than the earth can replenish naturally, something we have not done thus far.) The inclusion of
biodiversity as one of the five important areas in sustainable development highlights the connection between biodiversity and poverty alleviation (Timmer and Juma, 2005, p. 24). Biodiversity is now seen as
contributing to the alleviation of poverty in six ways: "food security, health improvements, income generation and sustainable livelihoods, reduced vulnerabilities, ecosystem services, and cultural and spiritual values" (Timmer and
Juma, 2005, p. 24). To understand the connection, consider that most of the worlds poor depend very greatly on the ecosystem for their "food, clothing, building materials, medicines, and
livelihoods," and the connection becomes clear. If the diversity of the ecosystem diminishes, the quality of life of this segment is likely to diminish along with it. "Its important to
