Moviegoer, reflects the basic idea that is presented within its pages and forms the basis of the search undertaken by its main character. This character, John Bickerson Bolling, Binx
to those who make up his limited circle of acquaintances, strives to define himself and his existence in a world that has become detached from itself in its modernistic obsession
with escapism. Binx Bolling is an avid moviegoer who, on the brink of leaving his twenties behind, begins to realize that the images on the screen have become more
vivid and more real to him than the actualities of life. Therefore Binx embarks on a search aimed at reconciling existence in a modern world with the traditional values
of truth and consciousness that have been mans quest since his beginnings. Binx is a modern man, and in a modern society that is dominated by and focused on
detached images of life instead of the realities of life, this search is categorized into the two modern terms of vertical and horizontal. "He is no more aware of the
mystery which surrounds him than a fish is aware of the water it swims in" (Percy 42). This observation is made by Binx Boiling as he reflects on his
experiences in pursuing what his aunt had referred to as his "flair for research" (42). He and his partner have enthusiastically gained the support and materials needed to conduct
an extensive research program to prove or disprove the idea that pigs might be induced to form certain calcium stones if their pH balance is disrupted and manipulated. Binx
along with his fellow research-minded partner set about to spend a summer deeply involved in this fascination subject filled with the thrilling expectation that they might possibly produce new findings
