sells khakis-big, baggy, comfortable, heavy duty, long-lasting khaki pants that he describes as resembling those worn by the flight deck crews on aircraft carriers in WWII. In fact, his inspiration
comes directly from the war, and from his father, who served during the conflict. It may even be that the elder Thomas wore khakis, the article doesnt say. Thomas
writes that he and his buddies used to drive to an army surplus store to buy khakis when they were in college, and that those old army khakis were the
best hed ever worn, bar none. More importantly, this was the mid-1980s, and at that time, nobody was working to brand khakis the way they were branding jeans. That is,
while Lee, Wrangler, Levis and others were trying to establish their jeans as the best available and gain competitive advantage over other companies, no one was worried about khakis. This
may have been Thomass most important realization: the field was wide open. Thomas had an almost religious experience with the idea. He felt that khakis represented something quintessentially
American. They were tough, long-lasting, hard-working and not fancy at all; they seemed to represent to him what is most enduring in the American character. Couple that with his wish
to honor his fathers memories, and you have a good starting point for a company. At first, though, Thomas didnt treat making and selling khakis as much of a business.
He first had the idea in 1984 or 1985, and between then and 1990 when he really got started, he seems to have treated the business more like a hobby.
