                                                    to begin, but Billingsleys take on black families is one that is rather classic, demonstrating that black families are not to be stereotyped. Indeed, while black families come in one  
                                                
                                                    color, they come in many shapes and sizes, have varying interests and are unique in their own right. Hence, if Billingsley did anything for the black family it was to  
                                                
                                                    define it as being not easily defined.  	During the 1960s there was still a great deal of prejudice and the idea that black people were living in less than  
                                                
                                                    perfect conditions began to emerge. People began to wonder whether there is some sort of racial anomaly to render the black family as more likely to be impoverished or to  
                                                
                                                    bear children out of wedlock. Of course, this is the stereotype and while some made excuses due to something called the culture of poverty thesis and other explanations, Billingsley avoids  
                                                
                                                    the argument altogether. Simply stated, the author contends that the stereotype is just not true. Instead, Billingsley points to the strength of the black family, which had brought them from  
                                                
                                                    their early salve days to the current condition that is admittedly less than stellar, but still has some redeeming value.  	The author points to the families that are intact  
                                                
                                                    and that work. He points out that there are certainly differences between the black and white families he studies, but that does not mean that the white families are necessarily  
                                                
                                                    superior. To an extent, the structure of the black family is a reflection on a racist America as indeed, they had to adapt, make the best of things, and so
