There are studies that show this is not true, as being bilingual from an early age can benefit preschoolers in the long run. Not only can reading in both the
native language and English language help improve a childs vocabulary, being bilingual will help them in the workforce later in life. Researchers have found three skills necessary at the
preschool age for a child to have a stronger ability to read: phonological awareness, print knowledge, and oral language (Farver, Lonigan, & Eppe, 2009). Phonological awareness is the ability to
hear similar sounds (e.g. nursery rhymes). Print knowledge is being able to recognize letters on flash cards, and oral language is the knowledge of basic vocabulary and grammar. With these
skills, children should be able to learn easier, faster, and hopefully enjoy the process more. As Stewart (2004) mentions, reading skills need to begin before the actual reading happens,
and these skills are created with making preschoolers aware of phonetics and sound-symbol correspondence. This in particular needs to happen in the homes of those whose children are learning English
outside of the home. But just because these children speak and read another language inside the home, doesnt mean theyre incapable of learning to read English as well. Between
reading books at home and book in the classroom, children picked up a significant amount of vocabulary words in Roberts (2008) study of preschoolers reading English books in school and
original language books at home. The fact that vocabulary in general was expanded is significant. As children use and hear the words in the home or in school, they will
