Introduction Hard as it may be for many to believe, bilingual education continues to receive substantial criticism in the national media. Moreover, staunch opponents of these types of programs have been identified as early as the1900s, when children of immigrants entered schools in large numbers. In those days being raised in a bilingual home was seen as imminently deleterious to ones academic success. At that time, children were discouraged from speaking their native language at school, and English immersion was the order of the day (Comparison of Philosophical Assumptions of English-only L2 Instruction Versus Bilingual Education).
