Baggins is the focal point and impetus of all of the action that unfolds in J.R.R. Tolkiens fantasy The Hobbit. It is not only the retelling of a mythic
quest not unlike the heroic tale of Beowulf, as many literary scholars have noted, it also represents Bilbos psychological journey towards maturity. Bilbo is a hobbit, and although he
is 51 years of age when his journey begins, in hobbit years, he is still very much a child. Like all adolescents, Bilbo needs to be tested in order
to define his own independent identity (Green 133). Born on September 22, 2890 as the only child of Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took, young Bilbo was very much a
composite of both parents (Bilbo Baggins). Shy like his father, but with his mothers sense of adventure and inquisitiveness, his formative years seldom extended beyond the family hole known
as Bag End. An old family friend, the esteemed wizard Gandalf, had observed Bilbos adventurous tendencies from afar (Meyers). Like any adolescent, Bilbos development was being restricted by
his limited - albeit comfortable - surroundings. Gandalf recognized that if Bilbo was going to realize the extent of his potential, he needed to expand his horizons beyond the
familiarity of Bag End. So, in 2941, the wizard offered to take young Bilbo under his wing and introduce him to the world so that he could find his
